Semolina Cake | Eggless Cake | Rava Cake

Semolina is also called as Rava or Suji in Hindi. It is a type of flour made from Durum wheat and has a coarse texture. In South India Semolina is typically used to prepare Idli, Uttapam, Rava Dosa, Upma and many more dishes. Semolina can also be used in some recipes for baking such as cookies to add a crisp texture. Semolina Flour is also used to prepare pastas and breads.

Semolina Cake is a one bowl cake recipe and makes the best tea time cake. You can use any essence of choice such as orange, vanilla or pineapple and also top it with some roasted nuts or tutti frutis. I have kept this recipe for Semolina Cake very simple and easy with ingredients easily available at home.

This Semolina Cake or Rava Cake is an eggless cake recipe. We have replaced eggs with curd, which is activated with leavening agents like baking powder and baking soda that rises the cake. I have used fresh curd and not sour curd.

Is Semolina Healthy? Is Semolina Gluten Free?

Semolina is an excellent source of protein and fibre, has less calories and no cholesterol. It has more nutrients that all purpose flour and supports in weight loss and improves digestion. Of course, Semolina is not Gluten free since it is a wheat product and definitely not suitable for people with medical conditions or gluten sensitivity.

How to make Semolina Cake?

Baking is Bliss!! It is so much fun to prep up for cakes or cookies and then watch them bake. The excitement never ends and the aroma of these bakes just makes you happier. Today I’m sharing my recipe for Semolina Cake or Rava Cake.

Semolina Cake is a very simple yet delicious cake and the best part is it has very little all purpose flour. If you want to avoid using it, you can definitely skip it or replace it with wheat flour. This cake makes an amazing tea time cake. I enjoy the brown crust in all my cakes, it just tastes so wow and I can’t stop nibbling on it. You can prepare this cake even for your kitty parties or serve a slice for breakfast, you’ll love it all the time. Sweet and perfectly soft and spongy prepared using rava, curd and milk with flavoring of orange and baked to perfection!!

Basic Cooking Information

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 cup castor sugar
  • 1 cup fine rava/ semolina
  • 1/4th cup all purpose flour (optional)
  • 1/4th cup fresh curd
  • 3/4th cup milk + 3 tbsp
  • 2 drops of essence of choice (I have used orange essence)
  • Pinch of salt (skip if you’re using salted butter)
  • 1 tsp baking powder 
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

Method

  • In a bowl, whisk butter and sugar till creamy and fluffy. You can use a hand blender or hand whisk as suitable.
  • Add curd and half of the milk from the 3/4th cup and continue to whisk.
  • Add rava, maida, essence and mix well.
  • Add remaining milk and blend well to make smooth batter and rest this batter for 15 minutes.
  • Set your oven to pre-heat at 180 degrees for 10 minutes.
  • You will see rava has soaked all the milk. Add 2 or 3 tbsp or little more milk if needed and mix.
  • Now add baking powder and baking soda and mix well in one direction. 
  • Pour in greased baking tin and bake in pre-heated oven for 40 – 45 minutes at 180 degree.
  • Check at 35 minutes, insert a tooth pick to check. If it comes out clean, your cake is ready. 
  • Once done, remove the tin and allow it to cool for 15 – 20 minutes.
  • Flip it over on a cake stand or a rack and allow to cool completely. 
  • Semolina Cake is ready!!
  • Once cool, cut in slices and serve your delicious Semolina cake!

If baking in a micro wave

Pre-heat your microwave and bake on convection mode or for 40 – 45 minutes at 180 degree.

All ovens and microwaves are different, hence it is important to check the cake after 35 minutes.

As for the cooking time, the recipe suggests baking the cake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 40 – 45 minutes. However, please note that the actual cooking time may vary depending on your oven and the size and shape of your baking tin. It’s always a good idea to start checking the cake a few minutes before the suggested cooking time to avoid over-baking it.
